GDPR for Developers

@ Milton Keynes Perl Mongers

In this talk, Jon Allen (JJ) will discuss the impact of the forthcoming GDPR on the developer.

The key principle revolves around the fact that personal data is a loan, not a gift and is still owned by the person it pertains to.

Working within this principle, the data owner can ask for the data back - and this can cause technical challenges.

If requested, the owner can ask to have their data discarded but just deleting it will not work. This is likely to cause data integrity issues and may also impact other compliance requirements.

Organisations holding data must also know how the data found it's way in to their systems and most of today's business software does not allow for this.

Open Standards can ease compliance when implemented to support interoperability of data. This comes as standard with most Open Source implementations but for developers working on closed standards and not in the habit of working with others, a cultural shift is required as well as technical changes.

There are many other factors to consider and this talk sets out to help the developer understand how to approach this new legislation without putting system integrity or usability at risk.
